The Marcus Raskin Award for Civic and Intellectual Courage is a new initiative of the Institute for Policy Studies and the Raskin Family to honor Marc’s legacy of speaking truth to power. Marc founded the Institute for Policy Studies with Dick Barnet in 1963, which has since served as a hub for all of the major social movements of our time, from civil rights and women’s rights, the anti-war movement, and social movements in support of the poor and the environment. This award recognizes an individual who is outstanding in the fields Marc was passionate about, including peace, reconstruction, art and politics, and the awardee is chosen by a small committee of Raskin family members and IPS staff.

Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II

We are thrilled to recognize Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II as the 2019 Marcus Raskin Awardee for his incredible leadership in the revived Poor People’s Campaign. To date, the campaign has built a broad-based grassroots movement across the United States to confront systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, and the war economy.

We welcome you to join this special program commemorating Marc’s legacy and celebrating the work of Rev. Barber and the Poor People’s Campaign.

Kindly RSVP at this link: ips-dc.org/RaskinAward2019. The dress code is casual and light refreshments will be provided. For questions, please email Michelle Munjanattu (michelle@ips-dc.org).
