Video: Layoffs at the EPA May Impact Federal Funding for Communities

Basav Sen explains how cuts to the EPA will harm communities impacted by pollution.

The federal government laid off more than 600,000 workers in the first months of 2025, while another 75,000 accepted buyouts and resigned from their federal post. These mass layoffs have had an widespread effect on vital programs and services that Americans rely on, including the Environmental Protection Agency.

IPS Climate Policy Director Basav Sen warned these cuts will have devastating effects for communities impacted by pollution. “They will not have any advocates for them within the government,” Basav says… “They will also miss the expertise of government-funded scientists who may be able to work with communities to document environmental justice impacts.”
